$75–100/hr · Mercor · Hourly, 15 hours a week

Complete financial crime case exercises that replicate real-world compliance analyst work, producing documented determinations graded against rubrics.

What you would do

  • Review transaction-monitoring alerts, KYC profiles, and transaction history to adjudicate risk
  • Evaluate client onboarding and KYC packets for completeness and document discrepancies
  • Resolve beneficial-ownership chains and apply 10% and 25% UBO thresholds
  • Classify sanctions and adverse-media matches as true positives, false positives, or escalations
  • Produce Suspicious Activity Report narratives with clear, defensible written explanations

Who they want

  • 3+ years hands-on AML, financial crime, KYC/CDD, sanctions screening, or transaction surveillance experience
  • Background in banking, fintech, payments, or money-services business compliance
  • Working knowledge of FinCEN, FATF, and OFAC frameworks and SAR and CDD documentation standards
  • Ability to write clear, defensible written rationales for every determination
  • CAMS, ACAMS, or CFE certification preferred; SQL or transaction analytics helpful

What the interview asks about

  1. 1.Transaction alert adjudication

The interviewer verifies you can distinguish suspicious transaction patterns from legitimate business activity and document findings for regulatory review.

For example: “A transaction alert flagged rapid fund transfers between related accounts across multiple jurisdictions. Walk me through how you would evaluate this alert, what additional information you'd need, and how you'd document your determination.”

  2. 2.KYC documentation and discrepancies

Compliance depends on identifying gaps and conflicts in client documentation that could mask illicit activity or hide beneficial owners.

For example: “During KYC review, you found conflicting information about a client's ultimate beneficial owner across two submitted documents. Describe how you'd resolve the discrepancy and what remediation you'd require before approval.”

  3. 3.Beneficial ownership chain resolution

Complex structures deliberately obscure true ownership; accurate UBO analysis requires systematic application of thresholds and clear documentation.

For example: “A client is a trust with multiple layers of beneficiaries. Explain how you would trace the beneficial ownership chain, apply the 25% threshold, and identify the UBO for regulatory reporting.”

  4. 4.Sanctions and adverse-media judgment

False positives waste resources while missed matches create regulatory risk; interviewers assess your judgment distinguishing signal from noise.

For example: “A sanctions screening match returned a name very similar to a listed individual but with different birth date and nationality. How would you adjudicate this match and document your decision?”

  5. 5.Regulatory framework application

Competent analysts cite regulatory standards and demonstrate knowledge of FinCEN, FATF, and OFAC requirements, not just intuition.

For example: “A client disclosed ownership of entities in multiple high-risk jurisdictions. Describe what additional CDD you would conduct under FATF standards and how you would document your findings.”

A task you may get

Complete a timed exercise: review a mock alert packet and produce disposition plus SAR narrative; review a KYC packet and generate a discrepancy and remediation list; adjudicate a batch of sanctions matches with rationales for each.

How to prepare

  • Review current FinCEN, FATF, and OFAC guidance on SAR requirements and CDD standards
  • Prepare examples from your prior AML work showing alert adjudication and documentation
  • Refresh your knowledge of beneficial ownership analysis and UBO threshold application
  • Document a complex case where you identified discrepancies or resolved ambiguous beneficial ownership
