$60–80/hr · Mercor · Part time

Join a designer talent network to contribute to AI training projects in UI/UX and graphic design on a flexible, part-time basis.

What you would do

  • Work on contract design projects that train AI models, creating deliverables based on real-world design scenarios
  • Evaluate AI-generated design outputs on visual quality, usability, and practical applicability
  • Provide detailed feedback on design work that helps AI systems improve their understanding of effective visual communication
  • Contribute your expertise in user experience research, interface design, and visual systems to frontier AI research
  • Collaborate in a remote environment and work on your own schedule within typical 15-30 hour weekly commitments

Who they want

  • Background in UX research, visual interface work with design tools (Figma, Adobe XD, or similar), and prototyping experience
  • Strong communication abilities for explaining design decisions and providing constructive feedback in writing and presentations
  • Self-directed remote worker comfortable managing varied projects and meeting project-specific guidelines
  • Ability to work independently and reliably deliver quality work on flexible, part-time schedules
  • Portfolio demonstrating design impact across multiple projects or client types

What the interview asks about

  1. 1.User experience research integration

AI models learn design judgment from your feedback; understanding how you use research to inform decisions teaches models to reason about users.

For example: “You're designing a checkout flow for an e-commerce application. Walk through how you'd research user pain points, test your prototype, and use findings to refine the interface.”

  2. 2.Interface design across Figma and Adobe XD

Different tools have different strengths; your ability to leverage each tool appropriately demonstrates nuanced design judgment.

For example: “A project requires both high-fidelity interface design and interactive prototyping. How do you use Figma and Adobe XD differently, and why would you choose one tool over the other for specific tasks?”

  3. 3.Visual design consistency and systematic thinking

Scalable design requires systems thinking; your ability to build and maintain visual consistency teaches AI how design systems function.

For example: “You're designing a product with 40+ screen types across mobile and desktop. How do you establish visual consistency while adapting for different contexts?”

  4. 4.Evaluating and critiquing AI-generated design

Your feedback on AI outputs directly trains models to understand design quality; vague critique ('looks bad') provides no learning signal.

For example: “An AI generates a dashboard layout that is visually cluttered and has poor information hierarchy. Give specific feedback about what's wrong and what should change to make it effective.”

  5. 5.Flexibility and independence in remote work

Network-based projects require self-direction and reliability; models learn judgment partly from your demonstrated professionalism.

For example: “You're assigned three different design projects simultaneously with varying scopes and tight deadlines. How do you manage your time and ensure quality across all deliverables?”

A task you may get

Design a UI for a specified scenario (mobile or desktop) documenting UX research, decisions, and visual consistency. Evaluate an AI interface design with specific feedback.

How to prepare

  • Collect five interfaces you admire and document the UX research questions each likely answers (user pain points, mental models, accessibility)
  • Build a simple prototype in Figma or Adobe XD demonstrating your design system thinking and interaction patterns
  • Review recent AI design outputs or generative design tools and practice critiquing them with specific observations about visual hierarchy, usability, or brand application
  • Write a one-page case study of a past design project, focusing on how user research informed your visual design decisions
