An iPhone user who contributes a de-identified health data export including HealthKit activity metrics and linked clinical records to train health-focused AI systems.
What you would do
- Ensure your HealthKit app is fully populated with all health categories that apply to you, including activity, heart rate, sleep, workouts, and any other relevant metrics
- Connect your health records from a qualifying healthcare institution to Apple Health using the Health Records feature
- Verify that your linked clinical records include all required sections: immunizations, lab results, medications, vital signs, and clinical notes
- Provide informed consent to share four demographic attributes: age, gender, approximate region, and activity level
- Submit your comprehensive health export, with the option to provide updated data in future rounds
Who they want
- iPhone user with Apple HealthKit data actively populated across multiple health categories
- Access to electronic health records from one of the qualifying healthcare providers and ability to link via Apple Health Records
- Willingness to share four demographic attributes and understand HIPAA-level de-identification privacy protocols
- Ability to verify data completeness and ensure clinical notes are included in your export
- Commitment to one initial data submission with optional future re-exports
Main skills
What the interview asks about
1.Institutional connectivity
The dataset requires your health records to come from a specific list of major healthcare systems. You need to understand whether your provider qualifies and how to locate and connect your accounts.
For example: “Most of your care is at a small clinic, but you saw a rheumatologist at Cleveland Clinic once last year. Does one specialist visit at a qualifying institution get you approved?”
2.EHR completeness verification
The submission has a hard requirement for all four clinical data categories plus clinical notes. You need to know what each section contains and verify nothing is missing before submission.
For example: “Your linked records show immunizations, meds, and vitals, but no labs and no Clinical Notes section. Would you submit, or what would you need to fix?”
3.HealthKit data diversity
Submissions with only step count data are rejected. You need to populate multiple HealthKit categories to create a valuable, complete profile for the dataset.
For example: “You have an Apple Watch that tracks steps and sleep, but you've never set up your weight, blood pressure, or workout entries in HealthKit. Your steps show 8,000 per day on average. Can you submit, or what additional data would you need to add first?”
4.Privacy and de-identification
You're sharing sensitive health information and must understand the de-identification process, what remains identifiable, and privacy safeguards in place.
For example: “You're concerned that combining your age, region, and activity level might make you re-identifiable even after removing your name and specific dates. How would you evaluate whether this risk is acceptable given that de-identification follows HIPAA standards?”
5.Data export authenticity
The project explicitly rejects synthetic or demonstration data. You need to understand what constitutes a real export from your own Health app versus test or fabricated data.
For example: “You're not comfortable with the privacy implications but want the payment. Could you create a demonstration export with plausible-looking data from a test Apple HealthKit environment to submit? What would be the consequences?”
6.Consent and withdrawal
You retain the right to withdraw consent at any time and have your data removed. You need to understand what this means and whether there are any penalties.
For example: “Three months after submitting your data, you change your mind about sharing health information. You withdraw consent. What happens to your data and your payment, and how quickly would you be removed from the dataset?”
A task you may get
Check your Health app and list visible clinical data categories from your provider. Note which ones have data in the last year and identify any missing required categories.
How to prepare
- Open Apple Health on your iPhone and verify that you have Health Records set up and synced with one of the qualifying institutions
- Review the list of 50+ qualifying healthcare providers and confirm whether your primary or specialist care is affiliated with any of them
- Examine the four clinical categories in your linked health records to confirm immunizations, labs, medications, vitals, and clinical notes are visible
- Research how HIPAA Safe-Harbor de-identification works so you understand what specific information will be removed from your export
