What you would do
- Review AI-generated analyses of DCF models, comparable company valuations, and M&A scenarios
- Create benchmark responses that reflect real-world financial reasoning
- Flag errors in financial assumptions, discount rate selection, and growth projections
- Write evaluation prompts that test model performance on complex financial situations
Who they want
- 1+ years in investment banking, private equity, venture capital, or hedge funds
- Undergrad degree from a top-ranked university
- Proficiency in financial modeling, valuation frameworks, and capital markets
- Located in an English-speaking region with strong written communication skills
Main skills
What the interview asks about
1.Comparable company valuation
This probes your ability to critically evaluate whether an AI correctly selects comparable peers, calculates relevant multiples, and applies them to a specific target scenario.
For example: “An AI model valued a SaaS company using a peer set that includes both high-growth unprofitable firms and mature profitable ones, all at 8x revenue. What specific concerns would you flag about that approach for a young, venture-backed software startup?”
2.Discount rate and terminal value
This tests whether you understand how cost of capital, risk premiums, and long-term growth rates interact to drive DCF value, and whether you spot unrealistic inputs.
For example: “An AI discounted a mature industrial company's cash flows at 4.5% WACC with 3% perpetual growth, while another model for a biotech startup used 12% WACC with 8% perpetual growth. What questions would you ask to evaluate consistency?”
3.Deal structuring and return attribution
This evaluates whether you can trace through how leverage, preferred equity, and governance mechanics affect returns and recognize when an AI model oversimplifies those relationships.
For example: “A private equity acquisition proposal shows a 25% IRR to equity holders in a base case, but the model assumes debt repayment straight from operating cash flow. What hidden risks might that IRR calculation be missing?”
4.Financial statement integrity
This probes whether you know to challenge whether line items are accurately classified, whether accounting treatments are appropriate, and whether pro forma adjustments are realistic.
For example: “An AI model builds valuation off a 3-year historical EBITDA average that includes $2M in one-time consulting fees, $3M in stock-based comp, and $500K in merger costs. How would you evaluate whether those adjustments belong in normalized earnings?”
5.Market and macro assumptions
This assesses your ability to identify when an AI model anchors on outdated or inconsistent macro views that undermine valuation credibility.
For example: “An AI model forecast 5-year revenue growth of 25% annually for a retailer in a declining category, using 2% terminal growth. How would you reconcile that contradiction?”
A task you may get
Evaluate a 2-3 page AI-generated investment thesis on an M&A target, identify 4-5 specific reasoning gaps or false assumptions, and draft a corrected executive summary.
How to prepare
- Review recent articles on valuation challenges in your sub-domain and note specific scenarios where standard models break down
- Work through 2-3 historical company valuations side-by-side with current valuations to observe how assumptions and multiples shift
- Prepare 2-3 real deal examples from your background where macro conditions, deal structure, or market context materially changed value
