You design venture capital diligence tasks and evaluate AI reasoning on startup analysis, market sizing, and investment decision-making.
What you would do
- Design realistic tasks mirroring VC diligence: deal screening, market opportunity assessment, founder quality evaluation, and competitive analysis
- Construct financial scenarios involving projections, cap tables, dilution modeling, and scenario-based valuation analysis
- Analyze AI-generated investment memos and due diligence outputs for analytical soundness and professional rigor
- Build ambiguous scenarios where multiple reasonable interpretations exist, testing how AI handles judgment calls
Who they want
- 3+ years at a venture capital firm, growth equity firm, or as founder/operator with significant deal evaluation exposure
- MBA or Master's in Finance from selective programs; direct IC memo drafting and partner-level diligence experience
- Demonstrated expertise in sizing target markets, evaluating founder quality, and analyzing competitive positioning amid uncertainty
- Exceptional written communication with concise, analytical documentation at professional IC memo standard
- Ability to work across pre-seed through growth stage companies and multiple industry verticals
Main skills
What the interview asks about
1.Market sizing under uncertainty
A startup might have a real market opportunity, but founders often overestimate TAM or confuse opportunity with realistic addressable scope. You must catch these errors.
For example: “A B2B SaaS founder claims $50B TAM by total addressable market methodology, but their growth strategy focuses on mid-market companies with 300-500 employees. Assess whether their numbers actually match their go-to-market.”
2.Founder capability signals
Founder quality matters more than market size; you must recognize whether someone has executed before, understands their customer intimately, or is optimistic without evidence.
For example: “Founder A has scaled two exits to $20M in revenue. Founder B has deep domain expertise but is starting their first company. Both are entering similar markets. How would your evaluation differ?”
3.Financial scenario modeling
Projections reveal assumptions. A startup showing 10x growth in year 3 on 20% pricing power in a competitive market needs scrutiny. You must spot inconsistencies.
For example: “A marketplace startup projects 60% year-on-year growth by charging suppliers 8% take-rate, but competitors charge 3-4%. What questions does this projection raise about their unit economics?”
4.Competitive positioning judgment
A market might be large but the startup's differentiation might be temporary, easily copied, or require distribution advantages competitors already have.
For example: “A fintech startup has better technology than incumbents but entering a market where the top three firms control customer relationships through regulatory compliance expertise and distribution. Assess the competitive moat.”
A task you may get
Analyze a startup scenario with financial projections, cap table history, and team bios. Draft an IC memo assessing whether this is a strong investment, noting both bullish and bearish signals, and explaining your reasoning concisely.
How to prepare
- Review 3-4 recent startup pitches or case studies, identifying the key due diligence questions partners asked and the assumptions being stress-tested
- Draft a sample market sizing analysis for a startup in an unfamiliar vertical, outlining TAM/SAM/SOM with clear assumptions and sources
- Study a published IC memo or investment decision document to internalize what professional-grade reasoning and presentation looks like
- Map out the diligence checklist for two different company stages-pre-seed versus Series B-noting how evaluation criteria differ
