A CAD and mechanical design expert who translates engineering schematics into precise 3D models and validates geometry correctness.

What you would do

  • Read and interpret dimensioned technical drawings to understand geometric intent and relationships
  • Create watertight 3D solid models with accurate curves, sweeps, lofts, and Boolean operations
  • Use Python or CAD scripting to automate or generate model geometry
  • Export models in standard formats and validate against specifications for dimensions and physical properties
  • Diagnose and correct discrepancies between expected and generated geometry

Who they want

  • Strong Python programming skills with ability to generate or modify geometry
  • Hands-on experience in 3D CAD modeling and computational geometry
  • Proficiency in interpreting dimensioned engineering drawings and schematics
  • Strong command of three-dimensional visualization and meticulous attention to dimensional accuracy
  • Experience validating CAD models through troubleshooting and testing

What the interview asks about

  1. 1.Dimensioned drawing interpretation

AI must extract geometric intent from technical notation; gaps or misreadings lead to failed models, so your judgment on drawing clarity is critical.

For example: “You receive a drawing of a curved bracket with a tangency constraint at one end and a diameter tolerance of plus-or-minus 0.005 inches at another. Walk me through how you would model this and what tolerance you'd build into the Python code.”

  2. 2.Complex curve and feature modeling

Sweeps, lofts, and Boolean operations are where most CAD errors occur; AI needs to learn when to use each and why.

For example: “An engineering drawing shows a part with a twisted profile along a 3D spine, ending in a fillet. You're building this in Python using CadQuery or similar. What would you check to confirm the geometry matches the drawing before exporting to STEP?”

  3. 3.Python-driven geometry generation

AI needs to learn how to translate geometric constraints into reproducible, parameterized code; your feedback on code correctness trains this skill.

For example: “You're given a Python function that's supposed to generate a cylindrical component with six radial holes. The output has only four holes, and they're slightly off-axis. How would you debug this, and what would you teach about the likely error?”

  4. 4.Model validation and tolerance

Even geometrically correct models can fail testing if volumes, surface areas, or inertia properties don't match intent. AI must learn to check these.

For example: “An AI generates a hollow spherical shell with inner radius 10 mm and wall thickness 2 mm. You need to validate volume and surface area. What would you calculate or check, and how far off could the AI's measurements be before you'd flag it as incorrect?”

  5. 5.Spatial reasoning under constraints

Dimensioned drawings encode spatial constraints that can conflict or over-specify. AI must learn to detect and navigate these.

For example: “A drawing specifies a component with three cylindrical holes positioned with tight positional tolerances that, by your calculation, are geometrically incompatible. How would you flag this for the AI and the task creator?”

A task you may get

Given a technical drawing with dimensions and tolerances, create a 3D CAD model and export it as a STEP file. Then generate a Python script that reproduces this geometry and validate that the model's volume and surface area match your expectations.

How to prepare

  • Bring examples of complex technical drawings you've worked with and be ready to explain your modeling choices
  • Prepare a short Python script or pseudocode that generates a simple geometric feature like a swept profile or fillet
  • Think of one design where tolerances or constraints made the drawing ambiguous and how you resolved it
