- Optionally use Python scripting to automate or enhance modeling tasks
Who they want
- 2+ years of professional experience in product design, CAD modeling, manufacturing, or industrial engineering
- Demonstrated expertise developing in FreeCAD or other parametric CAD systems
- Proficiency in GD&T and understanding of manufacturing processes
- Attention to detail and commitment to precision and quality
- Experience preparing engineering documentation for technical audiences
Main skills
What the interview asks about
1.Parametric model robustness
Parametric models are only useful if they remain valid when parameters change; this tests whether you understand constraints and update strategies.
For example: “You've created a parametric part with width, length, and a circular hole centered at a percentage of width. When the width doubles, the hole placement looks wrong. What parametric design principle did you miss?”
2.GD&T application to real designs
Tolerances must reflect both functional requirements and manufacturing reality; this tests whether you apply GD&T as a constraint or as engineering reasoning.
For example: “You're tolerancing a shaft and bearing interface. A drawing uses 0.001-inch tolerances. Manufacturing capability is ±0.002 inches. How would you reconcile that, and what functional requirement would justify tighter tolerances?”
3.Design for manufacturing
AI models should learn that design choices involve manufacturing trade-offs; this tests whether your models reflect actual engineering decisions.
For example: “You're designing a bracket that could be cast or machined. For an AI training dataset, what would you show differently between the cast and machined versions, and why?”
4.Quality assurance and peer review
Dataset integrity depends on catching and fixing errors; this evaluates whether you can critique your own work and others' systematically.
For example: “A peer's model shows a feature that violates material-thickness rules for the specified process. You've reviewed hundreds of similar parts. How would you document and raise that concern?”
5.Documentation for reproducibility
AI models should learn replicable engineering approaches; vague documentation defeats that purpose.
For example: “You've created a complex multi-feature assembly. Another engineer needs to recreate it or modify parameters. What documentation would let them do that without guessing your intent?”
A task you may get
Design a simple parametric mechanical part in FreeCAD, apply realistic GD&T, and document the modeling decisions in a 300-400 word writeup.
How to prepare
- Review current FreeCAD tutorials and features to refresh your parametric modeling skills
- Study 2-3 engineering drawings from actual designs, noting how GD&T is applied to real parts
- Document how you've adapted designs for different manufacturing processes in your own work
