What the interview asks about

  1. 1.Naval doctrine and operational employment

Credible naval analysis requires understanding how platforms and systems are actually employed across different operational scenarios.

For example: “You're analyzing a new surface combatant's role in contested waters. How would your assessment change if the operational concept shifts from a distributed model to concentrated task force operations?”

  2. 2.Classified data synthesis and compartmentation

Pentagon analysis routinely involves highly classified information; you must extract insights while respecting compartmentation and classification boundaries.

For example: “Your assessment draws on both classified intelligence about an adversary's capabilities and classified Navy program data. How would you structure your recommendation so senior leadership can act without unnecessarily expanding classification exposure?”

  3. 3.Flag-level audience briefing

Pentagon decision-makers are senior and time-constrained; your analysis must be concise, actionable, and structured for rapid comprehension.

For example: “A flag officer has 10 minutes to understand your assessment before a decision meeting. Your analysis involves complex trade-offs across three naval platforms. How would you structure the brief?”

  4. 4.Stakeholder coordination and alignment

Navy decisions involve Navy, OSD, Joint Staff, and Intelligence Community equities; effectiveness requires coordinating across those boundaries.

For example: “Your recommendation has implications for Navy budget priorities, Joint requirements, and Intelligence Collection tasking. How would you coordinate review and concurrence across those stakeholders?”

  5. 5.Maritime security and capability trends

Naval strategy evolves with geopolitical developments and emerging threats; your analysis must reflect current and anticipated conditions.

For example: “You're updating Navy capability recommendations in light of recent developments in anti-ship missiles, undersea threats, and power-projection demands. What analytical framework would you use to assess strategic implications?”

A task you may get

Develop a 1-2 page assessment on a current naval capability question using unclassified information, structured as if for flag-level review, with clear options and recommended action.

How to prepare

  • Review recent OPNAV strategy documents and major Navy initiatives to understand current decision context
  • Document 2-3 examples from your own background where you briefed senior leadership or coordinated across major stakeholders
  • Study how platform capabilities and doctrine have evolved in response to changing threat environments
