The role in one line
IT support specialist who diagnoses hardware, software, and networking issues across multiple operating systems.
Written by Training Turk from the public listing; it may be incomplete or out of date. Read the full posting on micro1.
What you would do
- Investigate hardware failures using diagnostics and symptom analysis to determine root causes
- Resolve software conflicts, missing updates, and application errors across different platforms
- Troubleshoot network problems including DNS, VPN connectivity, and routing using command-line tools
- Document each issue and resolution in ticketing systems with sufficient detail for handoff
- Communicate technical problems and solutions in clear language appropriate for end users
Who they are looking for
- Minimum 3 years of Tier 2/3 IT support with proven ability handling complex technical issues
- Strong command of Windows, MacOS, and Linux administration including architecture, services, and permissions
- Deep understanding of networking: TCP/IP stacks, DNS resolution, DHCP, VPNs, routing, and wireless authentication
- Proficiency documenting cases thoroughly in ticketing systems with clear reproducible steps
- Exceptional communication explaining technical decisions to non-technical audiences
Skills this role asks for
What the interview is likely to probe
1.Diagnosing network connectivity
Network issues are layered - symptoms might indicate DNS failure while root cause is DHCP, gateway, or authentication.
Expect something like: “A user cannot access a specific website but can access others; VPN shows connected. How would you isolate whether the issue is DNS, VPN routing, firewall, or the user's machine?”
2.Resolving OS-specific problems
Windows, MacOS, and Linux handle permissions, drivers, and services differently - expertise means knowing idiomatic troubleshooting for each.
Expect something like: “A Linux user reports intermittent network adapter issues. How would you use command-line tools to check driver status, link state, and logs?”
3.Hardware failure diagnosis
Distinguishing a failing drive from a controller issue or misconfiguration requires understanding hardware behavior and testing discipline.
Expect something like: “A laptop occasionally freezes for 10-30 seconds then recovers; disk activity stays high. What hardware and OS issues would you suspect and test?”
4.Documentation for team knowledge
Well-documented cases become institutional knowledge - poor documentation means every similar issue requires rediagnosis.
Expect something like: “Document a Windows permission issue preventing app installation for domain users. Write it so another support person could solve a similar case.”
5.Process improvement insights
Seeing patterns across many tickets reveals systematic problems that prevention can avoid, reducing future incidents.
Expect something like: “You notice 15 tickets this month with slow network speeds after Windows updates. How would you investigate whether this is a driver issue or regression?”
Exercise you may get
Given a scenario about a user unable to access resources over VPN, write a structured troubleshooting plan with specific diagnostic commands and decision points.
How to prepare
- Refresh understanding of TCP/IP model, DNS resolution, and common VPN protocols; practice tracing packet paths.
- Set up a multi-OS lab environment with Windows, Linux, and MacOS; practice diagnostic tools on each.
- Review ticket documentation from your role; identify cases you would write differently and practice concise, complete write-ups.
- Study common patterns: driver conflicts, DNS issues, VPN authentication failures - know characteristic symptoms.
