A parametric CAD specialist who designs mechanical components and assemblies supporting manufacturing processes.
What you would do
- Build parametric 3D solids of mechanical parts and assemblies from written specifications, with well-organized feature trees and solid constraints
- Edit and update existing parametric models to incorporate new design requirements while maintaining model integrity
- Verify models for size precision, tolerance callouts, and real-world production feasibility across different manufacturing processes
- Apply DFM knowledge to ensure designs are optimized for injection molding, sheet metal, CNC, and casting processes
- Document design changes and communicate technical requirements to manufacturing coordinators
Who they want
- 4+ years hands-on parametric CAD experience with SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Fusion 360, or Autodesk Inventor
- Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards in actual manufacturing settings
- Experience supporting at least two manufacturing methods like injection molding, sheet metal, CNC, or casting
- Current active involvement in mechanical and industrial CAD modeling work
- Strong technical writing skills with emphasis on clear, precise project documentation
Main skills
What the interview asks about
1.Complex assembly structure
Assemblies are central to manufacturing communication; interviewer verifies you can manage multi-part relationships, interference checks, and exploded views that production teams will reference.
For example: “A gearbox with 15 components needs restructuring to reduce part count by 30%. How would you reorganize the model and document the changes for manufacturing?”
2.DFM constraint integration
Effective DFM requires encoding manufacturing limits directly into the model; interviewer checks whether you think about real process capabilities during design, not just geometry.
For example: “Modeling an injection-molded part, the designer specifies draft angles of at least 1.5 degrees and wall thickness limits of 3mm. How would you apply these in the model?”
3.Tolerance interpretation
Tolerance decisions drive cost and feasibility; interviewer assesses whether you understand the relationship between tolerances, manufacturing process capability, and inspection methods.
For example: “A bore is 10mm nominal with a slip-fit requirement for a 10.002mm shaft. How would you call out this dimension and what GD&T controls would you apply?”
4.Geometric feature logic
Feature tree quality determines how easily others can edit the model; interviewer evaluates whether you build models for manufacturability and future maintenance, not just visual accuracy.
For example: “A bracket has mounting holes that must scale if the base geometry changes. How would you structure the feature tree to support proportional scaling?”
A task you may get
Model a mechanical component with specified geometry, material, manufacturing process, and tolerances. Organize the feature tree for editing and document all manufacturing constraints.
How to prepare
- Review ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards and practice applying geometric controls to typical mechanical parts
- Study CAD best practices for feature sequencing, parametric modeling, and assembly strategies in your primary software
- Research DFM principles for at least two manufacturing processes and understand their geometric constraints
- Prepare examples of your previous models that demonstrate complex assemblies and proper tolerance documentation
